How would someone in the state of texas go about marketing a product they recently thought up… I’m looking to either sell the idea, or market it myself and make cash off of it. Would I have to get a liscense for that? Please help!

The real problem for people with ideas is that they are not really sales people.

There are 2 ways. 1. Cooperate with an entrepenuer to do the selling. Generally I have found this unsucessful, as they often talk big and do nothing. Then ask you to do the marketing and sales. But when I have worked with the right person the level of success if very high.

2. Sell it yourself. The problem is that if you are selling your idea, you are not spending time developing it. But it can be the best way if you have the right motivation.

The actual marketing process is pretty complicated, so it depends on the product and the market.

For example, if you invented a better car headlight, you could sell it direclty, but I would go to car manufacturers and sell the idea to them.

But if you have a product that is easy to manafucter and distribute then you can make a lot more money doing it yourself. But to do that you need money. You can get a bank loan, take out a second mortage on your home, or go to a venture capital company. Or more likely you will find some investors or business partners.

the business is marketing related and has been in operation for about 11 years. i’m now making a transition to work for a big company in marketing and i’m doing that by getting my master’s in marketing from NYU. just wondering what i can expect after graduating as far as salary and job placement/position?

A master’s degree in marketing and some experience running a small business would mean you should have plenty of experience under your belt. In this case, in terms of marketing opportunities at large and profitable companies, a person with your background should at the very least be a marketing manager. Marketing managers are typically roles that require a minimum of five years of industry experience and often require MBA’s or other advanced degrees. Depending on the industry, a marketing manager of your experience level should expect anywhere between 90K – 140K per year.

Marketing as a field provides a very wide range of salaries. Entry level positions in marketing can pay anywhere between 30K-80K, and that range doesn’t get any easier as you climb up. The reason is that for any given position in marketing, the rule is simple: if you’re really good and you can prove that you are, you’ll get offered the maximum. Most people don’t, and that’s why there’s such a range.

Be prepared to fully and effectively market yourself upon graduating. Know how to articulate your unique value to the employer and communicate the attributes that set you apart from the other applicants. I’d say your small business background is a good start in terms of differentiating yourself.

Let’s imagine that I have come up with a novel business idea and want get it off the drawing board and into the market-place. I have little money to invest and cannot reach the decision makers of any Corporate entities which may show interest.
I am naturally interested in making money out of my idea and thus have reservations about revealing too much information until I hold some kind of formal agreement which gives me the necessary protection.
My suspicion, seeing as we have about 6,5 billion people on the planet, is that 99,999% of so called unique ideas are a load of ‘unowat’, but by the same token, there are possibly 6,500 really good ideas out there which have the potential of making millions.
So good people, what do I do with my unique business / marketing idea? This particular one could be directly linked to the 2008 Beijing Olympics as I believe it holds a strong element of ‘international appeal’ but time is running out for this option.

why would you say that? you must figure out what big corp would benefit from your idea, and present it to them. unless you are in jail, you can reach them.

Go with what you know. If you go with an energy drink, magazine, or clothing line you’ll be squarely in the world of requiring a distribution network to get your products out, otherwise you won’t sell a thing. You can also choose a D2C (direct to consumer) product if you don’t want to go into the details of getting people to ship your products, bill them on a net-30 basis, etc.

I’m going to be marketing products in 2 to 3 different volumes (i.e. 100ml). I only know the actual weight of the glass or plastic container from the suppliers I’m sourcing from. My products will be in packaged inside these containers after I receive them from the suppliers. How do I calculate the final net weight or volume capacity of the actual product packaged inside of container? Since this information -net weight or volume- needs to be displayed on the cosmetic label and outer packaging of my products. Thanks for your help.

They key word here seems to be “net weight” or “volume capacity”.

Net weight refers to the product you will put inside the glass or plastic container regardless of the
weight of the container. So finding the net weight of the product should be easy – measure out 100 ml
and put it on a postal scale – you have your net weight.

You also have your volume capacity = 100 ml.

Hi there,

I recently did a review on this product and have to tell you the truth. These are $ 20-$ 30 bottles of juice with no proven health benefits. It’s an all natural product and no FDA approval for specific health claims. It’s also priced too high to sell during a recession and that’s what the US market it going through right now.
I know this isn’t the answer you want to hear, but it’s the truth. This kind of product is the most difficult to market in today’s economic climate compared to others. If you had a brick and mortar business like a health food store in an affluent area, or a juice bar at a health club, then you’d have the chance to move some product at this price range.
I remember the dot com boom when people were throwing money literally out the window at everything online, but it isn’t that way anymore. It’s overpriced, there’s no health claims since it has no active ingredients, and that makes for the toughest of sells when it comes to these kinds of economic times.
I know people who have tried these kinds of products. The way they get customers is usually by the reseller program, who are afraid to cancel because they are invested in it, even if their house is full of juice, they can’t let go of it. This is what they are counting on, and it’s how many MLM’s make their money, by the auto order, not by retailing the product itself.
I wish I had better news about this type of product, but I don’t. We’ve done over 800 reviews of Internet businesses and I’ve seen a lot of these before and know this problem with them. If you want to call me at 813-908-3138 I’ll be happy to talk to you about it. I don’t give out links when it comes to this kind of thing, I’ll help if you want to call though.

To be honest, if this was the Clinton administration where people were spending money hand over fist (and I remember those days) then I’d say go for it. The problem is the economy and anything overpriced doesn’t sell. The effort just isn’t worth it compared to recession proof businesses.
