Business Q&A: How does someone go about marketing a product they have created or thought up?

Product Marketing

Product Marketing question by dat_boy_lalo: How does someone go about marketing a product they have created or thought up?
How would someone in the state of texas go about marketing a product they recently thought up… I’m looking to either sell the idea, or market it myself and make cash off of it. Would I have to get a liscense for that? Please help!

Product Marketing best answer:

Answer by flingebunt
The real problem for people with ideas is that they are not really sales people.

There are 2 ways. 1. Cooperate with an entrepenuer to do the selling. Generally I have found this unsucessful, as they often talk big and do nothing. Then ask you to do the marketing and sales. But when I have worked with the right person the level of success if very high.

2. Sell it yourself. The problem is that if you are selling your idea, you are not spending time developing it. But it can be the best way if you have the right motivation.

The actual marketing process is pretty complicated, so it depends on the product and the market.

For example, if you invented a better car headlight, you could sell it direclty, but I would go to car manufacturers and sell the idea to them.

But if you have a product that is easy to manafucter and distribute then you can make a lot more money doing it yourself. But to do that you need money. You can get a bank loan, take out a second mortage on your home, or go to a venture capital company. Or more likely you will find some investors or business partners.

Some ideas I thought of were maybe a magazine, energy drink, clothing line and that’s about it lol. Does anyone have any ideas?
The Objective of this marketing plan project is as follows: “prepare a marketing plan (it is very reasonable and acceptable to perform a marketing plan on a business that you are familiar or work or would like to work). It is also intened to assist you in analysis and Problem solving.

Go with what you know. If you go with an energy drink, magazine, or clothing line you’ll be squarely in the world of requiring a distribution network to get your products out, otherwise you won’t sell a thing. You can also choose a D2C (direct to consumer) product if you don’t want to go into the details of getting people to ship your products, bill them on a net-30 basis, etc.

PITTSBURGH, May 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Vivisimo, the leader in Information Optimization, was named a Finalist today in the “New Product of the Year – Software” category in The 2012 American Business Awards for their search-based application Customer eXperience Optimization (CXO). Vivisimo will ultimately be a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Stevie Award winner in the program.

The American Business Awards are the nation’s premier business awards program. All organizations operating in the U.S.A. are eligible to submit nominations – public and private, for-profit and non-profit, large and small.

For the first time, The American Business Awards will be presented at two awards events: the ABA’s traditional banquet on Monday, June 18 in New York, and a new tech awards event on Monday, September 17 in San Francisco.

More than 3,000 nominations from organizations of all sizes and in virtually every industry were submitted this year for consideration in a wide range of categories, including Most Innovative Company of the Year, Management Team of the Year, Best New Product or Service of the Year, Corporate Social Responsibility Program of the Year, and Executive of the Year, among others. Vivisimo’s CXO solution is nominated in the New Product or Service of the Year category for Software.

Vivisimo’s CXO application helps build customer loyalty and lifetime value by giving customer service representatives and account managers quick access to all relevant information needed to assist a customer no matter where that information is managed  inside or outside a company’s network. Additionally, CXO users receive an Activity Feed showing what’s going on at any moment with all of the accounts, products, team members and topics of interest. Updates can come from any of the many systems that CXO can access, as well as from colleagues who add comments directly to the feed. To empower customer-facing professionals even further, in March 2012 Vivisimo launched CXO Mobile, the first on-the-go solution to provide mobile employees the same quick, comprehensive mobile access to the same information they have in the office.

“First, I would like to congratulate all Stevie Awards nominees on their notable achievements,” said John Kealey, CEO of Vivisimo. “Second, I would like to applaud the Vivisimo team for the insight and dedication to developing the innovative solutions, like CXO, that help to empower customer-facing professionals with access to all the information they need to provide the best customer experience possible.”

Finalists were chosen by more than 140 business professionals nationwide during preliminary judging in April and May.  More than 150 members of 10 specialized judging committees will determine Stevie Award placements from among the Finalists during final judging, to take place May 14 – 25.

Business Q&A: How do I calculate the net weight or volume of a product I’m going to be marketing?

Product Marketing

Product Marketing question by : How do I calculate the net weight or volume of a product I’m going to be marketing?
I’m going to be marketing products in 2 to 3 different volumes (i.e. 100ml). I only know the actual weight of the glass or plastic container from the suppliers I’m sourcing from. My products will be in packaged inside these containers after I receive them from the suppliers. How do I calculate the final net weight or volume capacity of the actual product packaged inside of container? Since this information -net weight or volume- needs to be displayed on the cosmetic label and outer packaging of my products. Thanks for your help.

Product Marketing best answer:

Answer by MakeMoneyLouis
Dear Alana!

They key word here seems to be “net weight” or “volume capacity”.

Net weight refers to the product you will put inside the glass or plastic container regardless of the
weight of the container. So finding the net weight of the product should be easy – measure out 100 ml
and put it on a postal scale – you have your net weight.

You also have your volume capacity = 100 ml.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely
Louis

Business Q&A: how to work well as the product marketing manager at a ERP software company?

Product Marketing

Product Marketing question by supliang: how to work well as the product marketing manager at a ERP software company?
how to work well as the product marketing manager at a ERP software company? For example, the revenue forecast is the big headache.please give me some clues,or some weblinks.thank you very much

Product Marketing best answer:

Answer by Joe D
A basic tool to help you with forecasting is previous sales. You should see periods when sales were up and when they were down. Sometimes the peaks correspond to marketing activity like a trade show or direct mail. Other times ups and downs are caused by the seasons, especially in retail. Then there are industry specific peaks, like August for Federal Government customers.

If you have no history, research your competitors. If they are a publically traded company their performance can be found in a number of resource locations.

Finally, the goal in forcasting is to be exactly on target. Sounds obvious? Be careful. To over forecast will make your boss happy untill you fall short of goal and have excess inventory. To underforecast is even worse. You won’t be able to meet customer demand.

Good luck.

How is service marketing different from product marketing? How is it the same?

Product Marketing best answer:

Answer by Justin
Different:
– Has 3 extra Ps (I’ll leave it to you to find them).
– Service marketing has something called a service blueprint.
– Does not have the same type of physical distribution

Same:
– Consumer orientation and anticipating/meeting needs
– Brand image and development methods are utilized

Loads more, but that should get you started.

Business Q&A: What makes Services Marketing more challenging and tough than product marketing? Discuss in detail.?

Product Marketing

Product Marketing question by Stanley: What makes Services Marketing more challenging and tough than product marketing? Discuss in detail.?
Marketing Topic
Please give an explanatory answer for the above question which consists of more than two pages.

Product Marketing best answer:

Answer by SCOTT M
Marketing a service is usually more challenging than marketing a product because service is an intangible. It’s harder to show your [prospective] customer what he’ll be getting. You have to really know what you’re selling and gain the confidence of your customer. You have to be totally honest. If you’re not, you can be sure it will come back to haunt you because your customer will find out.

If you lose a service sale to a competitor, don’t feel too badly. If your would-be customer finds out that he went with the wrong guy, he’ll probably give you a call.
